Jaecoo is establishing its own naming convention for plug-in hybrids when it launches its new 7 SUV as a “super hybrid system” (SHS) in the UK at the end of this month.
Deliveries for the Jaecoo 7 SHS will start on January 31 and the Chinese brand said it wanted to introduce the new naming convention for its hybrid technology to set it apart from other PHEVs.
The Super Hybrid System combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a hybrid transmission and an 18.3kWh battery.
In the Jaecoo 7, the powertrain enables a zero emission range of up to 56 miles and combined fuel consumption of 403mpg. It has a combined power output of 352PS.
Unlike typical PHEV systems, Jaecoo said the SHS ensures the electric battery remains charged and never drops to 0%.
Peter Matkin, Jaecoo chief engineer and head of engineering for Chery Group, said: “The rapid growth of new energy vehicles is set to continue, and plug-in hybrids are a key part of this expansion around the world.
“The SHS enables an improved driving experience and better fuel economy, helped by a unique engineering solution.
Jaecoo engineers have worked tirelessly to fine-tune Chery ’s hybrid technology to offer a truly viable alternative to a pure electric vehicle.
In November 2024, prices were announced for the Jaecoo 7, a premium SUV that will come with a choice of petrol or plug-in hybrid (SHS) powertrains, priced from £29,435 and £35,065 respectively.
Jaecoo is partnered with Chery’s other brand Omoda as part of a dealer network that has already reached almost 70 locations across the UK.
Chery has ambitious plans for both brands in the UK and has already said it plans to outsell brands like Citroen, Mazda, Dacia and Seat here after just its second full year of sales.
