Man dies after falling from crane at closed site

A member of the public has died after apparently falling from a building site crane during the night.

West Yorkshire Police said they were called to the site in Central Road in Leeds city centre just before 8am on Wednesday (7 February) after a body was found.

A spokesperson said: “The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He is believed to have entered the site last night and fallen from height from a crane.

“He was not a member of staff working at the site.

“A scene and road closure were put in place while the circumstances were established but the incident is not believed to be suspicious.”

HG Construction is the contractor on the site of a 10-storey commercial and student building where a House of Fraser store was previously located.

An HG spokesperson said: “We can confirm that an individual who had no association with the site gained unauthorised access overnight on Tuesday.

“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased at this time. We understand the police are not treating the death as suspicious and we will continue to cooperate fully with any further investigations.”

A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive said the watchdog is aware of the incident and making enquiries.
