When New Balance revealed their new Allerdale silhouette a few weeks, ago we called it a shoe to watch over the next yearânot just at New Balance, but in the sneaker world at large. The buzzy silhouette sidestepped the dad shoe trend and yanked the granddad shoe into the mainstream, with pebbled brown leather and orthopedic soles marking a stark departure from the design sensibilities the brand has done better than anyone else for years. Imitations were sure to come, as well as new colorways. And in terms of the latter, well, it didnât take long.
In April, the brand is doubling down on the Allerdale, already one of our picks for the best sneakers of 2025, with a second colorway. This one keeps it simple, in line with its granddad shoe roots. The new Allerdale pairs a sleek white pebbled leather upper with an off-white sole and a subtle NB logo stitched to the side. On the one hand, itâs a little bit less instantly iconoclastic than the original brown colorway. On the other, if thereâs one thing all dads and granddads alike love, itâs a simple pair of white shoes.
Itâs not uncommon at all for a new silhouette to get multiple debut colorways. Itâs less common for a shoe thatâs as big a swing as the Allerdale. The second pair (with, it feels safe to say, more on the way) is a sign of the faith New Balance has in the model. With the brand navigating the ever-shifting waves of the sneaker hype cycle for the last several years, take it as a sign that the granddad shoeâs moment is only just arriving. It might even stay a while.
The New Balance Allerdale âWhiteâ is set to launch in April for $250.
