Operation for the Soul

Would you forgive someone who shattered your life?

On a beautiful summer afternoon in 2015, Bryan Kuck and his wife, Lynn, went for a motorcycle ride. On their way home, less than a mile from their house, they were run off the road by a drunk driver whose blood alcohol level was four times the legal limit. Lynn was killed instantly. Bryan was critically injured with two crushed hips, a broken pelvis, and a left leg that was amputated after being pinned under the wreckage.

The drunk driver was charged with homicide. At the hearing, Bryan told the court that he and his family had been given a life sentence. Bryan would live the rest of his life without his wife, and his three boys without their mother. Then Bryan turned to the drunk driver and said, “Nevertheless, I forgive you. If it weren’t for God, we’d all be lost. I’m just one beggar helping another find the Bread of Life.”

Bryan underwent seventeen surgeries to bring healing to his body, but only one thing could bring healing to his soul: forgiveness. Anger and bitterness feel empowering for a while, but they’re an emotional cancer that will eventually destroy you from the inside out. Resentment will make your days dark, your nights restless, and hinder your closest relationships.

Forgiveness is like an operation for your soul, filling your heart with hope and peace and releasing you to new life.
