It sounds like the citizens of Dolton, Illinois, have a lot to deal with, given their leadership.
It also sounds like they’re completely fed up at this point as well.
The mayor, Tiffany Henyard, has been termed the “worst mayor in America” by some and it’s easy to see why, given some of what she has been accused.
Henyard has been accused of misdeeds ranging from weaponizing police in retaliatory business raids to spending taxpayer money on luxuries like traveling to Las Vegas. Last month, Mayor Henyard reportedly vetoed the board’s resolution to probe her spending over purported misuse of funds.
While the FBI has allegedly already begun to investigate Henyard for purportedly misusing her local police force, the board’s resolution had called for the FBI to do further investigation about her spending of the town’s money.
But that wasn’t all, as the residents made clear in a wild town meeting on Monday night. Residents were mad because many were locked out of the meeting. Only 42 residents were allowed in. As the local reporter noted, they ended up chanting outside for answers and transparency, as well as pounding on the windows to get in.
One of the residents who was left outside called the mayor “scary,” another derided the lack of transparency with regard to their tax dollars and demanded to know why they can’t get into their own buildings, and why meetings were being canceled.
Some of the residents who did get inside called on Henyard to resign.
One of the residents demanded that she address the sexual harassment and retaliation allegation alleged by a former employee, telling Henyard, “You know what happened in Vegas.” The trustee accused was absent from the meeting. “Mayor, you need to step down because you have disgraced this Village, you really have, everybody up there need to go. We need to know what’s happening with our money,” the resident said.
Another resident said she had cancer and she accused the mayor of stealing from a cancer foundation.
How dare you? How dare you steal, and I helped you with your campaign, how dare you steal from us? I have to buy my wigs, are you going to reimburse me for the wigs that I’ve been spending my money on?”
She appeared to be referring to the “The Tiffany Henyard CARES Foundation” which, per the acronym, stands for Cancer And Remission Empowering Survivors. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has reportedly begun to crack down on this purported cancer charity for not being transparent about its financial reports.
Another said, “They say you are the worst mayor in America. I agree.”
Another resident said about Henyard, “I wouldn’t trust this woman if she stood on a stack of Bibles and had her tongue notarized, not a damn thing she says comes out her mouth is true.”
The town said that they had received threats and that’s why they had new security protocols with metal detectors and not letting everyone in.
I’m not down with any threats. But one can easily see why the residents have every reason to be frustrated with their leadership and they have a right to answers. We see on a national scale what it’s like with a horrible leader who doesn’t seem to give a darn about the best interests of Americans.
